Erin has always been influenced by the Great American Songbook and traditional Blues styles. The songs and arrangements are reminiscent of those traditions, but with a modern twist. The recording process was also influenced by the Jazz and Blues masters of the past, with the musicians all working together in the moment. Heartfelt vocals, beautiful melodies, and fresh arrangements shine on this Christmas EP released by Erin Krebs and her partner, guitarist Jeff Johnston. All is Calm is comprised of two original songs and five traditional carols presented simply and beautifully. Erin's inspiration for releasing this album comes from traditions of singing and playing these carols as a child with her family. The texture could seem limited, but somehow, it does not sound that way. The duo's re-harmonizations add fullness, and Erin's addition of flute solos on three of the songs add a different tone color. As a Jazz vocalist, Erin is accustomed to improvising on the melody; throughout the album she does just enough to make things interesting, but not so much as to take away from the already wonderful melodies. The album includes a brand new original song "All Year Long". The melody for this song started as a lullaby for Erin's niece Evelyn, with lyrics inspired by the need for peace "not just here, not just now, but forevermore" during a time that feels so divisive and difficult for many. Taking traditional and well-loved carols and making them your own is no easy task, but Erin and Jeff make it happen with their sincerity, musicianship, and chemistry as a duo.
